Organic, homegrown, stylish and comical – better than a box of chocolates
The great thing about having good laying chickens is that they really do earn their keep. They provide, eggs for eating, fertilizer (poo) for the garden and ‘egg gifts’.
We get 21 eggs a week from 3 chickens and there is no way our family of 4 could consume this many eggs even if we tried. So I like to give them as gifts instead of a bottle of wine or a box of chocolates.
I recently wrote a post about the return on investment of chickens and I found that if you use the eggs as an alternative to gift giving you can turn your backyard poultry into a nice little investment.
Giving eggs as a gift may sound ‘cheap’ but when you put a little effort in and get crafty, these egg gifts will look anything but cheap.
Here’s how I like to wrap the eggs;
- Make the Gift Card. Using some paper or card, cut out a rectangle in the shape of an old fashioned card and punch a hole in the top. I like to keep old birthday cards to cut up and use for making these – nobody writes on the back of the cover.
- Write your message on the card ie. “Fresh from the bum! XX Poopy, doopy & loopy” (that’s our chicken’s names).

XX Poopy, Doopy & Loopy - Lay 2 sheets of baking paper in a cross formation on a bench.
- Assemble 6 eggs onto the baking paper.
- Using some ribbon, twine or raffia (some saved designer gift ribbon looks great and a little bit comical) tie up the eggs into a bunch.
- Attach the card and finish tying the ribbon into a bow.
Voila!
The most comical, organic, home-grown and stylish gift you’ll ever give – it’ll certainly get a conversation started!
